| Classification of country codes (alpha-3) | |
|---|---|
| Beskrivelse | The standard for country codes (alpha-3) is based on the ISO 3166-1 code list and is adapted to Statistics Norway's needs for the purpose of producing personal statistics. ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 are three-letter codes defined in ISO 3166-1, part of the ISO 3166 standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to represent countries, dependent areas and specific geographical areas. They provide a better visual association between codes and countries than the alpha-2 codes. The third code set used in Statistics Norway (Standard for Countries and Citizenship) is numerical and gives association with continents based on geographical location. There is no correlation between Standard for Countries and Citizenship and ISO 3166-1 numeric-3. The list contains special codes XUK and XXX for unknown citizenship and citizenship Statsløs, respectively. Changes, footnotes, etc. are stated with a code reference that has the following order (alpha-2, alpha-3, num-3, SSB-3), for example Norway (NO, NOR, 578, 000). |
