Another record year for red deer hunting

A total of 39 100 animals were felled during the autumn of 2009 and the winter of 2011 – i.e. 1 400 more than in the previous year.

For the third time in a row the number of red deer felled exceeded the number of moose felled. Out of a felling quota of 54 350 animals, 72 per cent were felled. The felling quota has never been higher, and it increased by more than 3 400 animals from the previous year.

Most red deer felled in Sogn og Fjordane

Although red deer hunting has spread to other regions, as much as 95 per cent of the total felling is concentrated in six counties along the Atlantic coast: Rogaland, Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane, Møre og Romsdal, Sør-Trøndelag and Nord-Trøndelag.

In Sogn og Fjordane alone, 15 600 licences were issued and 11 800 animals were felled. In the two other main red deer counties – Møre og Romsdal and Hordaland – 11 100 and 7 800 animals were felled respectively. The felling increased by 175 and 300 animals, respectively, from the previous hunting year.
