At the end of 2010, almost 277 000 children attended kindergarten. This is an increase of 6 800 children compared with 2009. For children aged 1-5, 89 per cent attended kindergartens. This is an increase of 0.7 percentage points.
For children aged 1-2 years, there was an increase of nearly 4 800 children, and for children aged 3-5 years there were almost 2 200 more children. In these age-groups, there were 98 700 and 175 200 children respectively in kindergarten.
In 2010, the proportion of children aged 1-2 who attended kindergarten was 79 per cent; an increase of 1.6 percentage points from 2009. For children aged 3-5, 96 per cent attended kindergartens.
At the end of 2010, almost 87 400 people were employed in kindergartens, and in total they worked
70 200 man-years. The proportion of directors and educational leaders with approved pre-school teacher education or other college education was 85 per cent.
