Higher wholesale and retail trade turnover

Despite a decline of 2.1 per cent in the number of enterprises, and 0.3 per cent in the number of persons employed, the combined turnover for enterprises within wholesale and retail trade increased by 3.7 per cent from 2009 to 2010.

The combined turnover for the more than 51 600 enterprises rose to NOK 1 285 billion in 2010; nearly NOK 46 billion more than in 2009. At the same time, the number of employed persons decreased by more than 1 100 persons to a total of 367 800 persons. The enterprises within the trade and repair of motor vehicles experienced the largest increase in turnover, with NOK 19 billion more than the previous year.

Continued growth in retail trade

There were almost 26 300 enterprises and about 215 800 persons employed in the retail trade in 2010. This corresponds to a decline of 2.7 per cent in the number of enterprises and an increase of 0.7 per cent in the number of persons employed. The combined turnover in the industry totalled NOK 407 billion; an increase of 3.2 per cent from 2009.

Fewer persons employed within wholesale trade

The number of employed persons fell by more than 3 100 persons, or 2.8 per cent, to about 107 300 persons in 2010. Nevertheless, the turnover increased by 2.0 per cent, or NOK 14 billion, to nearly NOK 709 billion.

Largest increase in turnover within trade and repair of motor vehicles

From 2009 to 2010, the turnover within the trade and repair of motor vehicles rose by 12.7 per cent, or NOK 19 billion, to a total of NOK 170 billion. The more than 8 000 enterprises in the industry employed almost 44 700 persons.

Preliminary figures

Preliminary figures for structural business statistics are only published on enterprise level. Only figures for number of enterprises, persons employed and turnover on a 3-digit industry level are published. The data are not as thoroughly revised as they will be when the final figures are published in May 2012.

Deviation between preliminary and final figures

Comparisons between preliminary and final figures for the wholesale and retail trade in 2008 and 2009 show that the final figures for number of enterprises were 0.4 per cent lower both years. The final figures for turnover were 0.2 per cent lower in 2008 and 0.1 per cent higher for final figures in 2009. The employment figures were 0.8 per cent lower for final figures in 2008 and 0.3 per cent lower in 2009.
