Increase in retail turnover

The turnover within retail trade rose by more than NOK 10 billion, to nearly NOK 394 billion in 2009. While there was a small increase of 0.3 per cent in employment, the number of enterprises fell by 1.6 per cent. The nearly 8 000 enterprises in the industry had a combined turnover of about NOK 150 billion and employed slightly more than 43 800 persons in 2009. Turnover was thus reduced by 4.5 per cent and employment by 2.2 per cent compared to 2008. The number of enterprises was almost unchanged.

Preliminary figures

Preliminary figures for structural business statistics are only published on enterprise level. In general, the figures for enterprises will show other values than the figures for local kind-of-activity units. This is due to the fact that an enterprise registered with its main activity in one industry may have local kind-of-activity units in other industries. Only figures for number of enterprises, persons employed and turnover on a 3-digit industry level are published. The data are not as thoroughly revised as they will be when the final figures are published in May 2011.

Deviation between preliminary and final figures

Comparisons between preliminary and final figures for the wholesale and retail trade in 2007 and 2008 show that the final figures for number of enterprises were 0.8 and 0.4 per cent lower respectively. The final figures for turnover were 0.2 per cent higher in 2007 and 0.2 per cent lower for final figures in 2008. The employment figures were 0.6 per cent higher for final figures in 2007 and 0.8 per cent lower in 2008.
