Responsibility for this traffic is owned by 819 ships with 16.3 million worth of gross tonnage registered in 39 foreign registers. The three countries with the most Norwegian controlled vessels in 2013 were Bahamas, Marshall Islands, and Hong Kong. Together these three countries had 262 ships with 7.5 million worth of gross tonnage that were controlled by Norwegian enterprises.
From 2012 there has been an increase in the number of vessels in foreign registries by 13 per cent, or 95 ships. Increased gross tonnage, at 425 000 tonnes, only barely touches 3 per cent, indicating that the new vessels are in the lower size classes. In fact, 76 new ships were smaller than 5 000 gross tonnes.
Fewer port calls for Norwegian registered ships
Vessels in NOR and NIS made fewer port calls in 2013 than the year before. At 51 500 port calls the traffic has fallen by almost 2 per cent. Arrived gross tonnage fell by about 5 per cent and ended up slightly below 753 million tonnes. At the same time more Norwegian registered ships were active in 2013. A total of 941 vessels over 1 000 gross tonnes in NOR and NIS is 24 more than in 2012.
