Struggling buses

In the first quarter of 2015, scheduled buses had 90 million passengers; a 3.2 per cent reduction compared to the same quarter in 2014. As the number of passengers on rails only increased by 1.7 million, public transport saw a total setback of 0.8 per cent.

Figure 1. Public transport. Passengers

For the second quarter in a row, a decrease was seen in the total number of passengers in public transport in the first quarter of 2015. A reduction of 1.3 million passengers compared to the first quarter of 2014 gave a decrease of 0.8 per cent.

Hard competition for buses

Despite steady passenger growth, buses have lost market shares in recent years. While passengers by bus have increased by 10 per cent in the last 5 years, the growth on rail has been 27 per cent. There has been a stronger growth in capacity on rails in the same period, and for longer fares the cost of travelling by plane has been reduced significantly. El-cars in the public transport lane has made it constantly harder for buses to stick to the timetable. Most of last year’s setback can be attributed to buses in major cities.

Strongest expansion by train

Rail companies increased their capacity by 6.2 per cent from the first quarter 2014 to the first quarter of 2015, while the corresponding increase for tram, underground and light rail was 2.4 per cent. The passenger growth was 5.2 and 1.9 per cent respectively.
