Passenger record

A total of more than 152 million passengers made the first quarter of 2014 an all-time high in public transport. Passenger growth was strong for all modes of transport and showed an over all increase of 6.7 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2013.

Figure 1. Passengers. Preliminary numbers

There were 4.7 million more passengers by both bus and on rails in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the corresponding quarter in 2013. Public transport has its absolute low season in the winter and boat kilometres were reduced by 4.3 per cent. Despite this reduced offer, the number of passengers increased by 12.5 per cent, or 0.2 million passengers.

Public transport on rails has been prioritised

In the last five-year period, kilometres offered on rails have increased by more than 20 per cent. This increase in efforts has resulted in a passenger growth of 25.9 per cent. The establishing of Bergen light-rail in 2010 has been a considerable contribution, but does not explain all of the growth.

Increased ticket revenues

Ticket revenues increased proportionally with passenger growth last year and came to a total of NOK 2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2014. More than half of this was made up of payments for transport on rails.

Easter influences quarterly comparisons

Easter was in the first quarter in 2013 and the second quarter in 2014. During holiday times, there is no school transport and fewer commuter and job fares, and the increase in holiday fares is far from compensated by this. It is mainly bus, light rail, tram and underground that suffer during holidays. When comparing first quarters in 2013 and 2014, the growth may be overestimated.
