Turnover continues to rise

The average turnover per taxi trip was 5.6 per cent higher in 2010 compared to the preceding year. The number of taxi trips on the other hand declined by 3 per cent during the same period.

Taxi statistics. Turnover and number of trips per quarter

The total revenue for the industry amounted to NOK 7 736 million during 2010, which is 3 per cent higher than in 2009. This, coupled with low transport activity, led to higher turnover per trip as well as higher turnover per number of hours occupied in 2010 relative to 2009.

The industry had a total of 33 million trips driven in 2010, which amounts to 341 million kilometres driven with passengers on board. Consequently, the average taxi trip per passenger was lower, with 10.2 kilometres in 2010 compared to 11.4 in 2009.

An average taxi trip took 24.3 minutes in 2010 compared to 26.2 in 2009. Capacity utilisation, measured as a share of kilometres driven with passengers to total kilometres driven, was 58.3 per cent. Capacity utilisation measured as a share of taxi hours on offer, however, was 40.8 per cent. In other words, an average taxi is occupied for 58.3 per cent of the distance covered or 40.8 per cent of the times it is in operation.

More taxi trips in the 4th quarter of 2010

Number of taxi trips and turnover increased respectively by 1 and 7 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2010 relative to the same quarter last year. Number of hours occupied, and kilometres driven with passengers on board, on the other hand, declined during the same period.

The taxi statistics are based on a nationwide survey carried out quarterly on the taxi business classified by code 49.320, Taxi Operation in SIC07. The survey covers over 90 per cent of the taxi population in the country. The data is then scaled up to population size using a factor. This factor is calculated based on data from the survey and VAT data reported to the Directorate of Taxes.
