April record in guest nights

Published:

In April, there was a record at Norwegian accommodation establishments, compared to the year before. The timing of Easter and a warm month may have had an impact.

The accommodation statistics registered almost 2.1 million guest nights in April. Norwegian guest nights at accommodation establishments increased by 60 000 compared to April the year before, while foreign ones increased by 26 000.

Decline at hotels

During April, there were 1.6 million guest nights at Norwegian hotels, an decline of 0,8 per cent from last year. While the foreign guest nights increased, the Norwegian ones fell by 3.3 per cent. The counties Oslo and Akershus were the main contributors to this decline.

In terms of the purpose of accommodation, it is not surprising to see that occupational guest nights declined, while recreational guest nights increased. This may be linked to the timing of the Easter holiday, and fewer available days for work. The figure below indicates a strong relationship between the timing of the holiday and the purpose of guest nights.

Good month for camping sites

The guest nights at camping sites increased by 36 per cent in April this year compared to the same month the year before. This was entirely due to a increase in Norwegian guest nights. The underlying reason behind this is the timing of the Easter holiday, together with a warm month.
