467 000 establishments in Norway

The number of establishments registered in Norway amounted to 467 330 as per 1 January 2009. Most establishments are within wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and also agriculture, forestry and fishing.

These figures are collected from the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises (CRE) at Statistics Norway.

Most large establishments are within human health and social work activities

Establishments within human health and social work activities amount to 9 per cent of all establishments. On the other hand they represent 23 per cent of all establishments with 100 or more employees.

A total of 14.5 per cent of all establishments are within agriculture, forestry and fishing. Establishments within wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles amount to the same share.

Regional differences

There are clear regional differences with regard to localisation of the establishments. Most establishments are located in Oslo and Akershus, Hordaland and Rogaland. The least establishments are located in Finnmark and Aust-Agder. A total of 24 per cent of all establishments in Norway are located in Oslo/Akershus. With regard to the largest establishments, with 100 or more employees, Oslo dominates with 23 per cent of the establishments.

In proportion to the counties’ population, the number of establishments per capita is greatest in Sogn and Fjordane, followed by Oppland, Oslo and Nord-Trøndelag. Hordaland and Akershus are the counties with fewest establishments per capita.

New classification implemented from January 2009

As of January 2009 a new version of Eurostat’s industrial classification, NACE, is in use for classification of enterprises and establishments. In this statistic this implies a more detailed presentation of establishments by economic activity in tables and in the StatBank.
