Major revisions

The external debt statistics have been significantly revised this quarter. Statistics Norway had misinterpreted the guiding principle when recording direct investment: intercompany lending. Direct investment: intercompany lending has previously been netted in the same way as direct investment in the international investment position and balance of payments statistics. The figures are corrected from the 1st quarter of 2005. Revisions of the other objects are only ordinary revisions as a result of new information. All objects before the 1st quarter of 2005, including direct investment, are treated in gross terms. The magnitude of the revisions ranges from NOK 100 billion to NOK 400 billion every quarter since the restructuring of the statistics at the beginning of 2005. The revised figures lead to a corresponding increase in the external debt position total. Due to the revisions, Norway's gross debt at the end of the 4th quarter of 2012 increased by NOK 373 billion. Revised time series figures are available in StatBank.
