Decline in livestock keeping

Per 1 January 2007 a total of 34 800 livestock producers applied for production subsidies. This represents a decline of 5 per cent compared with 2006.

Holdings keeping domestic animals. 1992-2007*

Broilers. 1996-2006*

The number of dairy cows was reduced by 6 400 to 259 000 in 2007, while the number of beef cows remained on the same level as the year before. Since 1996, the total number of cattle has been reduced by 127 000 to a total of 900 200 in 2007.

From 2006 to 2007 the number of dairy goats was reduced by 8 per cent to 40 700. The number of breeding pigs fell by 3 900 to 97 800, while the number of pigs slaughtered increased slightly by 1 per cent to 1.46 million pigs in 2007.

From 2005 to 2006 the number of broilers slaughtered during the year increased by 8 per cent to 46.5 million.
