From 2012 to 2013, the number of livestock producers fell by 2 per cent to a total of 29 700.

The number of holdings with dairy cows dropped by 600 to 9 800, while the number of holdings with pigs dropped by 100 to a total of 2 500.

At the start of 2013, 14 300 holdings kept sheep; a decline of 200 holdings from the year before. About 2 000 holdings kept laying hens, while 600 had broilers. Both the number of holdings with laying hens and with broilers increased slightly from 2012 to 2013, by 4 and 2 per cent respectively.

As per 1 January 2013, a total of 851 000 cattle were registered, almost the same as the year before. The number of dairy cows increased by 1 100 to 238 700 from 2012 to 2013, and the number of beef cows increased by 1 700 to a total of 67 300 in the same period. The number of other cattle was reduced by 3 000 to 544 600 in 2013. The number of dairy goats was slightly reduced to a total of 33 000 in 2013.

The average holding with dairy cows had 24 cows in 2013, which is 7 more than in 2004. An average size holding with sheep had 73 sheep in 2013; 11 more than in 2004. The average holding with breeding pigs has grown from 42 breeding pigs in 2004 to 77 in 2013, and with laying hens from 1 200 to 2 100 in the same period.
