Monthly earnings increased by 7 per cent

Monthly earnings is perhaps the most important concept in wage statistics. Monthly earnings include basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. As with the annual earnings, overtime pay and other benefits are not included. The percentage increase in monthly earnings can differ some from that of the annual earnings. This is because monthly earnings are calculated every 1 October, while annual earnings are compared from one calendar year to the next.

The average monthly earnings for all full-time employees in social and personal service activities were

NOK 28 100 per 1 October 2002. This was an increase of NOK 1 800 or 7.0 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Membership organizations: 7.6 per cent increase

Employees in business and employers' organizations average at monthly earnings of NOK 34 900, while employees in trade unions had NOK 30 400. Percentage increases from 2001 were 6.9 and 8.2 respectively.

Recreational, cultural and other sporting activities: 6.5 per cent increase

Fulltime employees in radio, television, news agencies and the like earned NOK 30 400 on the average, which was up about NOK 1 500 or 5.1 per cent.

Professionals, technicians and associate professionals dominate this group. Their monthly earnings were NOK 30 100 on the average, which was up NOK 1 800 or 6.3 per cent. Those employed in offices, sales and services had NOK 24 700, an increase of NOK 1 600 or 6.9 per cent from 2001.

Other personal service activities: 6.7 per cent increase

Other personal service activities include washing, dry-cleaning, hairdressing and so on.

Full-time employees in washing and dry-cleaning had monthly earnings of NOK 20 700 per 1 October 2002, which is roughly NOK 1 900 more than at the same time 2001.

Hairdressers and beauticians received the same amount, but for them it was only a NOK 400 increase.

However, the increase in basic paid salary was NOK 900.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 19 260 full-time and 7 304 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2002 the statistics cover about 72 700 employees.

For some divisions, the tables are somewhat less specified compared to those of previous years. This has to do with the implementation of the NOS Standard Classification of Occupations.
