Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 100

Average monthly earnings of full-time employees in social and personal service activities amounted to NOK 26 300 at 1 October 2001. This was an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.2 per cent from the previous year.

Social and personal service activities cover a number of different services ranging from dry-cleaning, hairdressing, membership organizations, and recreational, cultural and sporting activities, to sewage and refuse disposal.

Close to one half of all full-time employees in social and personal service activities are employed in recreational, cultural and sporting activities, with monthly earnings of NOK 27 200. This amounted to an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4 per cent from the same time the year before. In comparison, employees of membership organizations had monthly earnings of NOK 27 500, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 4.5 per cent. Full-time employees in sewage and refuse disposal had monthly earnings of NOK 21 600, while full-time employees in other service activities had NOK 20 400. This amounted to an increase of NOK 800 for employees in sewage and refuse disposal, and just under NOK 900 for employees in other personal services.

Recreational, cultural and sporting activities: 4 per cent increase

Recreational, cultural and sporting activities cover radio and television operations, news agencies, motion picture and video production and other entertainment activities.

Full-time employees in radio and television production, motion picture and video activities and news agencies had monthly earnings of NOK 28 900, an increase of about NOK 1 000 or 3.5 per cent from the year before. More than three out of four full-time employees are employed in occupations requiring a higher education. Technicians and associated professional had monthly earnings of NOK 27 800, an increase of NOK 900 or 3.5 per cent. Employees in professional occupations had a NOK 1 600 or 5.4 per cent increase in monthly earnings, to NOK 32 300 as of October 2001.

Other entertainment activities include theatres, concert halls, music studios, amusement parks, museums, libraries, archives and the operation of sport facilities and sports clubs. Full-time employees here had monthly earnings of NOK 24 400, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 5.1 per cent from the previous year. Professionals, such as actors and musicians, earned NOK 25 500, an increase of NOK 900 or 3.6 per cent.

Membership organizations: 4.5 per cent increase

The membership organization division includes business, employers and professional organizations, trade unions, and religious and political organizations.

Employer organizations and trade unions have about the same number of full-time employees. Wage levels are higher for employees of employer organizations, with nearly NOK 32 700, against NOK 28 100 in monthly earnings for employees of trade unions. This corresponded to an increase from October the previous year of NOK 1 500 or 4.8 per cent and NOK 1 300 or 5 per cent, respectively. Clerks of trade unions had monthly earnings of NOK 21 600, an increase of NOK 800 or 4 per cent. The corresponding pay of the same occupational group in employer organizations was NOK 22 200, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.8 per cent.

Other personal service activities: 4.5 per cent increase

The division covers activities like washing and drycleaning, hairdressing and beauty treatment. Employees in washing and drycleaning had average monthly earnings of NOK 18 800, an increase of NOK 800 or 4.6 per cent. In comparison, employees in hairdressing and beauty treatment had monthly earnings of NOK 20 300, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.5 per cent.

Estimated annual earnings increased with 4.4 per cent

Full-time employees in social and personal service activities had estimated average annual earnings of NOK 312 100 in 2001, an increase of 4.4 per cent from 2000. Employees in sewage and refuse disposal had average annual earnings of NOK 257 300, up 4.7 per cent. For employees in membership organizations the average annual earnings were NOK 327 100, an increase of 4.6 per cent. Employees in recreational, cultural and sporting activities had NOK 322 700, while full-time employees in other personal service activities had average annual earnings of NOK 242 100. This corresponded to an increase of 4.3 and 4.2 per cent, respectively.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 17 701 full-time employees and 5 070 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for third quarter 2001 the statistics cover around 70 900 employed wage earners in social and personal service activities.
