Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 300

Average monthly earnings of full-time employees in social and personal service activities amounted to NOK 25 200 at 1 October 2000. This was an increase of NOK 1 300 or 5.3 per cent from the year before.

Social and personal service activities cover a number of different services ranging from dry-cleaning, hairdressing, membership organizations, and recreational, cultural and sporting activities, to sewage and refuse disposal.

Around half of all full-time employees in social and personal service activities are employed in recreational, cultural and sporting activities, with monthly earnings of NOK 26 100. This amounted to an increase of NOK 1 400 or 5.8 per cent from the same time the year before. In comparison, employees of membership organizations had monthly earnings of NOK 26 400, an increase of <br/>NOK 1 200 or 4.9 per cent. Full-time employees in sewage and refuse disposal had monthly earnings of NOK 20 800, while full-time employees in other service activities had NOK 19 500. This amounted to an increase of just over NOK 900 for employees in sewage and refuse disposal, and just under NOK 900 for employees in other personal services.

Membership organizations: 4.9 per cent increase

The membership organization group includes business, employers and professional organizations, trade unions, and religious and political organizations.

Employer organizations and trade unions have about the same number of full-time employees. Wage levels are higher for employees of employer organizations, with nearly NOK 31 200, against barely NOK 26 800 in monthly earnings for employees of trade unions as of October 2000. This corresponded to an increase from October the year before of NOK 1 300 or 4.5 per cent and NOK 1 400 or 5.7 per cent respectively. In occupations requiring a higher education, full-time employees of trade unions had monthly earnings of NOK 28 400, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.4 per cent. The corresponding pay of the same occupational group in employer organizations was NOK 31 800, an increase of NOK 1 300 or 4.2 per cent.

For full-time employees of membership organizations outside employer organizations and trade unions, monthly earnings were NOK 22 800 as of October 2000, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.9 per cent. Occupations requiring a higher education had monthly earnings of NOK 22 400, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.7 per cent from the same time the year before.

Recreational, cultural and sporting activities: 5.8 per cent increase

Recreational, cultural and sporting activities cover radio and television operations, news agencies, motion picture and video production and other entertainment activities.

Full-time employees in radio and television production, motion picture and video activities and news agencies had monthly earnings of NOK 27 900, an increase of about NOK 1 700 or 6.7 per cent from the year before. More than three out of four full-time employees are employed in occupations requiring a higher education. Technicians and associated professional had monthly earnings of NOK 26 900 in October 2000, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 5.6 per cent. Full-time employees in professional occupations saw a NOK 2 100 or 7.4 per cent increase in monthly earnings, to NOK 30 700 as of October 2000.

Other entertainment activities include theatres, concert halls, music studios, amusement parks, museums, libraries, archives and the operation of sport facilities and sports clubs. Full-time employees here had monthly earnings of NOK 23 300, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.3 per cent from the year before. Technicians and associated professionals had monthly earnings of NOK 23 800, an increase of NOK 900 or 4 per cent, while professionals earned NOK 24 600, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 4.9 per cent from October 1999.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 16 449 full-time employees and 4 621 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for third quarter 2000 the statistics cover around 69 800 employed wage earners in social and personal service activities.
