The account statistics for private schools presents detailed information about the activities in this sector on the basis of financial information. This gives important knowledge about the subsidies transferred to the schools from the government and municipalities. And information about how resources are used.
Users include public sector agencies, with Ministry of Education and Research as main user, private organizations, individuals, international organizations and media.
The account statistics for private schools are organized according to the NACE-standard and include enterprises that are registered in industry division (Nace rev.1.1)

The account statistics includes privately owned schools that operate under the act “Lov om private skolar med rett til statstilskot (privatskolelova)” as well as other private schools not covered by this act.
This statistics are based on a questionnaire named “Regnskapsundersøkelse for private utdanningsinstitusjoner”.
This statistics has no sampling.
This statistics are based on a questionnaire named “Regnskapsundersøkelse for private utdanningsinstitusjoner”. This questionnaire is sent out by mail to all schools in the population. It is possible to report the data by internet.
The schools’ annual accounts are controlled by accountants. Statistics Norway control that the summing up in the questionnaires are correct.
There is no estimation done in this survey.
The figures are not given on institutional and municipality level.
Private schools eligible for state subsidies are schools with approval under the act ”Lov om private skolar med rett til statstilskot (privatskolelova)”
Private schools not eligible for state subsidies are schools without such approval. These schools may also apply for publics funding, however not state subsidies based on the act ”Lov om private skolar med rett til statstilskot (privatskolelova)” .
Total running income includes e.g. tuition fees, state and municipal subsidies, public financing for disabled children/students and other subsidies/transfers.
Sales income includes both taxed and non-taxed income from sales, and other income not covered by VAT legislation (e.g. tuition fees).
State subsidies do not include public financing for disabled children/students. All other state funding of operating costs is included.
Labour costs include compensation of employees through wages, salaries and variable additional allowances, bonuses etc, plus employers' social contributions.
The Standard Industrial Classification (SN2002) used in Statistics Norway is based on the EU´s NACE-standard (Rev.1.1). The accounting standard used in this survey are in accordance with Norwegian Standard 4102.
Sources of error in this statistics are mainly incorrect reporting of variables asked for and errors in recording reported data.
Returned questionnaires are scanned into our database. Our registration program contains automatic controls, and the questionnaires that don't pass through these controls are checked manually. Nevertheless, the results of a statistical survey may contain collection and processing errors.
Non-response, that is when the respondent does not return the form or returns the form with incomplete information, will always be an aspect of form-based surveys. Non-respondent schools are not included in the statistics.

This statistics does not yet include the whole sector because of some unit non-response. The response rate for this survey is about 80 per cent.
It could be interesting to relate account statistics for private schools to other statistics in Statistics Norway, for example Number of students in compulsory and upper-secondary schools and the national accounts for this sector.
