Steady participation in short courses

Participation in short courses at folk high schools has been relatively stable the last 10 years. The number of participants has ranged from 18 500 to 21 700, with the exception of 2008. In 2010, the number of participants was 18 926.

Norwegian folk high schools offer a wide variety of short courses. The minimum duration of the short courses is 12 hours, and is normally at least 4 hours a day. The courses attract domestic as well as foreign participants. In 2010, 1 150 participants on short courses had a citizenship other than Norwegian. Most foreign participants were from Denmark, Russia, Sweden and Germany.

The most popular subjects in 2010 were aesthetic subjects and handicraft, which had more than 7 600 participants. Social sciences and health, social and sports subjects also had more than 3 000 participants each.

Women are in majority within most subjects in short courses at folk high schools. In 2010, 63 per cent of all participants were female. Short courses are most popular with the age group 50 years or older.
