Statistics on energy use by municipality not being updated in 2012

Statistics Norway will not be publishing figures for energy use broken down by municipality in 2012.
A large degree of uncertainty is attached to the figures that are currently available, and these should therefore be used with caution.
Statistics Norway will clarify this year whether the statistics are to be discontinued
or whether improvements will be made in order that they can be continued in 2013.

Energy use by municipality. 2008-2009*

Reduced energy use

The use of energy in Norwegian municipalities declined by 3 per cent in 2009. The use of energy declined in 239¹ of the 430 municipalities in Norway.

In 2009, total energy use amounted to 218¹ TWh, of which electricity accounted for about 50 per cent. The consumption of electricity declined by almmost 5 per cent in 2009.

Relatively low energy use per capita in Oslo

The stationary energy use in households in Norway was 9.4 MWh per capita in Norway in 2009. This is an increase from 9.2 MWh per capita in 2008. Oslo is one of the municipalities with the lowest energy use per capita in households. On average, households in Oslo used 7.9 MWh per capita in 2009. One of the reasons for the relatively low energy use per capita in Oslo is the high number of people living in flats.

Comparability with other statistics

The figures presented here differ somewhat from the figures presented in the Energy balance. Among other things, this is because energy use outside 5 nautical kilometres is not included in the statistics for energy use by municipality.

Uncertainty

The statistics are based on a combination of data on actual use of energy by municipality and estimates based on national and county figures.
