Norwegian guest nights increased by 3.0 per cent, while foreign guest nights increased by 14 per cent. Despite the easing of travel restrictions, the number of foreign guest nights remained low in July this year compared to pre-pandemic years.
More than 3 million guest nights at camping sites
Statistics Norway registered more than 3 million guest nights at camping sites for the first time for a single month. 2.8 million of these were Norwegian, a 5.2 per cent increase from July 2020.
The absence of foreign tourists was nevertheless felt by many camping sites. Foreign guest nights at camping sites increased by 19 per cent compared to July 2020. Compared to July 2019, however, this represented a 72 per cent decline. Foreign camping guest nights in July this year were mostly from Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark.
Guest nights at hotels in Oslo still lower than normal
There were 3 million guest nights at Norwegian hotels in July this year, approximately the same as July last year. There were increases in Oslo and Innlandet counties. The biggest declines were in Vestland, Agder and Møre og Romsdal. Hotel guest nights in Oslo remained low though, compared to the years before the Covid 19 outbreak.

In order to limit import infection, the Government introduced a quarantine hotel scheme on 5 November 2020. Guidelines have changed several times. For more information, see the governments’ webpage. In accordance with Eurostat, quarantine hotels are not included in the accommodation statistics even when there is economic activity at the hotel. Quarantine guest nights cannot be assigned by purpose as holiday, occupation or course, conference. It was not possible to extract all quarantine guest nights and some stays at quarantine hotels are included in the statistics for July. Hotels that are exclusively quarantine hotels are not included in the statistics.
