In 2017, life expectancy was 84.3 years for women and 80.9 years for men. In the last 30 years, the difference between men and women's life expectancy has halved.

Fertility declined to record low
A total of 56 600 children were born in 2017, 2 300 fewer than 2016. This gives a total fertility rate (TRF) for women of 1.62. This is the lowest level ever registered.

The number of immigrants grew by 21 700 in 2017, which is the lowest percentage growth in the last 20 years. The number of Norwegian-born to immigrant parents grew by 11 200 in the same period.

Low immigration and fewer births resulted in reduced population growth in 2017. The population increased by 37 300 in 2017, a decline from 44 300 the year before. At the end of the year there were 5 295 600 people in Norway.
