Most youngsters in Rogaland

One out of five persons in Norway is 16 years old, and among the municipalities, Rogaland has the highest share of youngsters. Oslo, on the other hand, has the lowest share.

Those below 16 years constitute 20 per cent of Norway’s population. Rogaland has the highest share of youngsters, as they make up 23 per cent of the population. In Akershus and Vest-Agder, they constitute some 22 per cent. Oslo has the lowest part of young people, 18 per cent.

The elderly men and women, 67 years and above, make up 13 per cent of the population. The municipalities Hedmark, Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane have the highest shares of elderly people.

Highest growth since 1957

By the turn of the year Norway was home to 4 681 000 persons. During 2006 the population increased by 40 900 persons, 7 000 more than the increase in 2005. The population growth in 2006 reached 0.88 per cent, the highest relative growth since 1957.

The age distribution in a population is a result of several conditions: Whether people live long, whether a large part migrates to or from the country (and their age) - but primarily whether many were born during the last decades.

Figures for population by age and sex are now ready

Figures for Norway's population are, as was done for the first time last year, published in the middle of February.

This implies that figures for population by age and sex are published now, whereas more detailed statistics will be published 8 March.

Likewise, figures for the changes in the last quarter of 2006, as well as for the year 2006 as a whole, are also published now.
