Exports of NOK 86 billion in ocean transport

Total exports within ocean transport amounted to NOK 86.1 billion in 2006, while total imports amounted to NOK 47.3 billion. Thus, ocean transport contributed NOK 38.8 billion to the Norwegian balance of services in 2006.

This is the first time Statistics Norway publishes figures on external trade in services by enterprises involved in ocean transport. This article provides information on type of services traded and the countries the industry is trading in.

Water transport of goods accounts for two thirds of service export

The most important type of service traded by the industry is water transport of goods, which amounted to NOK 57.3 billion or 66.6 per cent of the total export in ocean transport in 2006. Furthermore, NOK 21.7 billion of the export consists of rentals of manned vessels. Rentals of unmanned vessels is also an important export activity in the industry and amounted to almost NOK 4 billion.

The enterprises involved in ocean transport imported about NOK 20 billion worth of services related to water transport in 2006. This amount corresponds to 42.2 per cent of the total import of services this year. Rentals of manned vessels is also a main import activity, amounting to NOK 13 billion or 27.4 per cent of the total service import in ocean transport in 2006.

Mainly European trade

Almost 68 per cent of the external trade by enterprises involved in ocean transport takes place in Europe. The total export in the Nordic countries amounted to NOK 10 billion, whilst the import of services totalled NOK 5.5 billion. The total export in other EU countries amounted to NOK 35.1 billion. Outside Europe, Asia is the most important trade region for the industry, accounting for 12.9 per cent of the external trade.

Correlation with other statistics

The figures are included in the Balance of Payments . The data are collected in the Survey on Structural Business Statistics and are correlated to the Structural Business Statistics on Water Transport and the Operating Survey for Vessels in Foreign Going Trade .
