616 400 pupils in primary and lower secondary schools

In the autumn of 2007, there were nearly 616 400 pupils in primary and lower secondary schools, and the number of schools was 3 100. This is a reduction of 2 650 pupils, and the number of schools is reduced with 30.

Private schools and pupils in private schools. School year 1985/86-2007/08

Pupils in private schools

In 2007 there were 153 private schools and 14 380 pupils attended these schools. This is an increase of 7 schools and 900 pupils from 2006. Only 2.3 per cent of the total number of pupils in primary and lower secondary schools attended private schools.

Mother language training

Almost 22 100 pupils received mother language training in primary and lower secondary schools, which is 3.6 per cent of all pupils, the same level as last year. Language training was registered in 117 different languages in addition to the category ”others”. Urdu and Somali had the majority of pupils with mother language training with 2 500 pupils each. Nearly 2 000 pupils received mother language training in Arabic.
