6 127 pupils at folk high schools

In total, 6 127 pupils attended different long courses at Norwegian folk high schools at 1 October 2004, according to preliminary figures. This represents a small decrease from 6 170 in 2003.

Most pupils from Hordaland - and in Hordaland

There were most pupils from the county of Hordaland in Norwegian folk high schools, followed by Akershus and Rogaland. Six of ten pupils were women, and nearly half of the students were 19 years old. Among the 19-year-olds there were three women for every man.

Hordaland was also the most popular school county, as folk high schools in Hordaland had 695 pupils, followed by 543 pupils in Buskerud and 534 pupils Sør-Trøndelag.

Close to 88 per cent of the pupils attended a folk high school outside their county of residence. The schools in Sør-Trøndelag and Finnmark had most pupils from their own county, with 24.5 and 22.9 per cent respectively. Conversely, only 3.7 percent of the pupils from Vestfold and Telemark attended folk high schools in their county of residence.

Norwegian citizens made up 92 per cent of all folk high school pupils at 1 October 2004. The majority of the foreign citizens came from Somalia and Denmark, with 20 and 17 pupils each.

Most applicants from Hordaland

For the school year 2004/05, 9 195 people applied for a place at the folk high schools, about the same number as in the previous year. 857 applicants came from Hordaland and 769 from Akershus. More than half of the applicants were 19 years old, and 71 per cent were women.

There were 235 foreign applicants with registered citizenship. 23 were from Somalia and 18 were from Sweden.

Majority attended folk highs schools in Hordaland in the school year 2003/04

In the school year 2003/04, 6 316 pupils completed or interrupted a long course at a folk high school. Of these 4 046 pupils, or 64 per cent, were women. Hordaland was the most popular county, as 11.4 per cent of the pupils attended a school there.

Few pupils drop out from a folk high school course. In 2003/04, 6.5 per cent of the pupils dropped out. 173 men did not complete their course.

In the school year 2003/04, 89 per cent of the pupils were Norwegian citizens. The 468 foreign pupils came from 75 different countries; 109 pupils from China, 29 from Iraq and 22 from Russia.
