Hordaland at top in folk high schools
Hordaland is the county which attracts most pupils to its folk high schools. 12 per cent of all folk high school pupils are found in Hordaland. Hordaland is also the county which recruits the most pupils to Norwegian folk high schools.
Preliminary figures indicate that 5 800 pupils participated on different main courses at Norwegian folk high schools by October 1, 2002. More than half of all pupils were 19 years old. Roughly 6 per cent of all Norwegian 19-year-olds were thus enrolled in a folk high school during 2002.
Many pupils from Hordaland - and in Hordaland
The most common county of residence for pupils in folk high schools was Hordaland, next was Akershus and Rogaland. Hordaland was also the county which attracted most pupils to its folk high schools. 699 pupils, or 12 per cent of all pupils, were enrolled in folk high schools in Hordaland.
87 per cent of all pupils were enrolled in a folk high school located in another county than their county of residence.
Two-thirds are female
The proportion of male/female differed more among pupils than among applicants. Women accounted for 57 per cent of all applicants, while men accounted for 43 per cent. The corresponding figures for pupils were female 64 per cent and male 35 per cent. The difference can partly be explained by the fact that a larger proportion of foreign male applicants were not offered or declined the offer to enter a folk high school.
102 citizenships among applicants, 82 among pupils
The data show that 102 different citizenships were represented among the applicants. Among the pupils who were enrolled there were 82 different citizenships. 72 per cent of all applicants and 88 per cent of all pupils were Norwegian. Of the non-Norwegian applicants, Sri-Lankans were in majority. There were 956 applicants from Sri-Lanka, but only 4 were enrolled. Of all Danish applicants, 73 per cent were enrolled by October 1. Of all Swedish applicants, 34 per cent were enrolled by October 1.
Next to Norwegian and Danish pupils, Chinese pupils had the highest percentage of pupils compared to applicants. 36 per cent of Chinese applicants were reported as pupils. Chinese pupils were the largest single group of foreign pupils. There were also many Danish, Swedish and Indian pupils.
Many pupils have parents with higher education
More than half of all pupils had at least one parent with a university or college degree. 45 per cent of all pupils had parents with upper secondary education as the highest level of education. For 86 per cent of all pupils in folk high schools, we have information about their parents' highest level of education.
