12 400 more children in kindergartens

At the end of 2008, 261 900 children attended kindergarten. This is an increase of 12 400 children compared with 2007.

In 2008, the proportion of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten was 87.2 per cent; an increase of 3 percentage points from 2007. For children aged 1-2, 74.7 per cent attended kindergarten, and the corresponding figure for children aged 3-5 was 95.6 per cent.

At the end of 2008, almost 232 500 children attended kindergarten full-time. This is an increase of 17 500 compared with the previous year. The number of children who attended kindergarten part-time was 29 400; a reduction of 5 100 children. Full-time is defined as 33 hours or more per week.

At the end of 2007, 81 400 people were employed in kindergartens, and in total they worked 65 100 man-years. This is an increase of 5 700 employees and 4 600 man-years from the previous year.
