More children attend kindergarten

At the end of 2007, 249 500 children attended kindergarten. This is an increase of 14 500 children, or 5.8 per cent, compared with 2006.

In 2007, the proportion of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten was 84.2 per cent, an increase of 3.8 percentage points from 2006. For children aged 1-2, 69.2 per cent attended kindergarten, while 94.3 per cent of children aged 3-5 did.

At the end of 2007, almost 215 000 children attended kindergarten full-time. This is an increase of nearly 21 000 compared with the previous year. The number of children who attended kindergarten part-time was reduced by 6 200. Full-time is defined as 33 hours or more per week.

60 500 people were employed in kindergartens at the end of 2007, and in total they worked 75 800 man-years. 91 per cent of employees were women, which is the same level as in the previous year.
