11 500 more children in kindergarten

At the end of 2006, 235 000 children attended kindergarten. This is an increase of 11 500, or 5.1 per cent, compared with 2005.

In 2006, the proportion of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten was 80.4 per cent, an increase of 4.2 percentage points from 2005. For children aged 1-2, nearly 62 per cent attended kindergarten. Nearly 93 per cent of children aged 3-5 attended kindergarten.

At the end of 2006, almost 194 300 children attended kindergarten full-time. This is an increase of nearly 21 000 compared with the previous year. The number of children attending kindergarten part-time was reduced by almost 9 500. Full-time is defined as 33 hours or more per week.

At the end of 2006, close to 60 500 people were employed in kindergartens, and in total they worked 55 400 man-years. The percentage of female employees was 90, which is the same level as in the previous year.
