Altogether 81.5 per cent of all loaded vehicles passing through Norwegian custom offices were from Norway and Sweden.

Vehicles from other nations have also slowly increased their share. From claiming 15.5 per cent of inbound and outbound vehicles in 1990, their share increased to 18.5 per cent in 1999. Just over 557 000 vehicles crossed the border in 1999, against almost 420 000 in 1990. The increase from 1998 to 1999 was five per cent.

A similar picture emerges if we look at the tonnage carried. In 1990 Norwegian vehicles transported almost 49 per cent of all goods, against almost 45 per cent in 1999. Here too, Swedish vehicles increased their share the most. Altogether 8.8 million tonnes of goods were transported over the border last year. This is 4.1 per cent more than in 1998 and just over 40 per cent more than in 1990.

Increase in 4th quarter

Just over one million tonnes of goods were transported out of the country in 4th quarter 1999, an increase of 12.2 per cent from 4th quarter 1998. Nearly 1.3 million tonnes of goods were transported into Norway. This was an increase of 3.6 per cent compared with fourth quarter 1998.

Just over 145 000 loaded lorries crossed the border in fourth quarter. Over 81 000 lorries crossed the border into Norway. This was an increase of 4.7 per cent compared with fourth quarter 1998. Nearly 65 000 vehicles were driven out of the country, an increase of 11.6 per cent.

Traffic through the customs station at Svinesund increased by just over 10 per cent from 4th quarter 1998, accounting for 1.1 million tonnes of goods at the end of 4th quarter 1999. This accounted for 48.3 per cent of the overall tonnage. Just over 72 000 loaded lorries passed through Svinesund, while just over 28 000 vehicles crossed over the border at Hån/Ørje. They accounted for 68.8 per cent of all loaded lorries arriving or leaving Norway in 4th quarter 1999, nearly the same as in the corresponding period in 1998.
