Strong increase in expenses
The expenses in the public sector on Svalbard increased 27.5 per cent from 2013 to 2014. This is the biggest annual growth covered by these statistics (1997-2004).
2013 | 2014 | |
---|---|---|
Share of total employment on Svalbard | ||
Central government (incl. social security funds) | 12.8 | 13.4 |
County authority | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Municipalities | 12.7 | 12.0 |
Enterprises owned by central government | 31.0 | 31.0 |
Enterprises owned by local government | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Private sector | 43.5 | 43.7 |
The expenses increased by NOK 200 million, from NOK 730 million in 2013 to NOK 930 million in 2014. The NOK 70 million increase in the Governor of Svalbard’s transport services was the largest increase, and was due to an expansion of the helicopter capacity. The annual growth in expenses has been stronger than in the rest of Norway in most of the recent years.
A total of 25.5 per cent of the employment on Svalbard is in the public sector. The national figure is 29.5 per cent. The lower figure in public employment on Svalbard is due to less social services than in the rest of Norway. On the other hand, the share of public sector employees working with research activities is far higher than for the rest of Norway.
The government-owned coal mining company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani AS and its subsidiaries has always been the most important employer for the Norwegian population on Svalbard. Because this company is government-owned, public corporations account for 31 per cent of total employment. This is a very high share compared to the mainland, where public corporations employ 3 per cent.
