Strong growth in manufacturing

Sales of goods manufactured in Norway rose by 19 per cent from 2005 to 2006. Sales of platform modules to the oil industry experienced a particularly strong growth.

The statistics show an increase in sales of manufactured goods in manufacturing, mining and quarrying from NOK 457 billion in 2005 to NOK 544 billion in 2006.

Increase in deliveries to oil industry

Sales in the industry other transport equipment rose by 45 per cent from NOK 54 billion to NOK 77 billion. Building of ships and oil platforms is the main activity in this industry, and the building of platforms in particular increased in 2006. In relative terms, the largest rise was seen within the production of machinery and equipment. Sales of these products rose by 48 per cent from NOK 28 billion to NOK 41 billion, mainly caused increasing demand in the oil industry.

Large industries such as basic metals production, production of electrical and optical equipment, and oil refining and production of basic chemicals also experienced considerable growth, at 28, 22 and 18 per cent respectively. Production of food, beverages and tobacco is still the largest manufacturing industry. However, sales of these products only rose by 5 per cent, from NOK 95 billion to NOK 100 billion. Sales of products from oil refining and basic chemicals totaled NOK 97 billion.

Paper industry still in a slump

The production of pulp and paper products fell by 5 per cent, from NOK 17 billon in 2005 to NOK 16 billion in 2006.

The commodity statistics are based on information from the 2 679 largest enterprises classified under manufacturing, mining and quarrying. These enterprises contributed to 90 per cent of the total production in these sectors in 2006.
