7 per cent of eligible voters have immigrant backgrounds

A total of 277,000 of the 3,618,000 who are entitled to vote this year have an immigrant background. This is approximately 7 per cent of the total. A total of 52,400 persons without Norwegian citizenship are allowed to vote for the first time.

Eligible voters by country background. County. Per cent

Figure 1 shows how large a share the voters with an immigrant background make in each county, grouped by country background. A total of 49,600 have a background from a Nordic country, while 85,000 have a background from one of the other European countries. Eligible voters with a European background make up about 49 per cent of the voters with an immigrant background who are entitled to vote.

The rest are divided between 94,700 with an Asian background, 29,100 with an African background, 8,400 from North and Central America, 9,300 with a South American background and 800 from Oceania.

One in five eligible voters have an immigrant background in Oslo. Persons with non-European backgrounds constitute the largest group among these. Nord-Trøndelag is the county where voters with a foreign background make up the smallest share of eligible voters, with 2.6 per cent. In another 7 counties, they account for less than 5 per cent of the total.

First time voters without a Norwegian citizenship

A total of 52,400 of eligible voters are first time voters who are older than 19 years of age and without Norwegian citizenship. In Oslo, this group accounts for 3.3 per cent of all eligible voters, while forming less than one per cent in Hedmark, Oppland, Møre og Romsdal and Nord-Trøndelag.

Forty-seven per cent of the first time voters who are older than 19 years, have moved to Norway from a European country, while 53 per cent have a background from a non-European country. This group forms the largest share in Telemark with 53 per cent, while making up the smallest share in Finnmark with 37 per cent.
