Increase in exports

The export of goods in July amounted to NOK 77.4 billion, while imports ended at NOK 42.1 billion. Exports and imports both increased compared to July 2012, by 7.5 and 2.6 per cent respectively. An increase in the export of crude oil and mainland exports explained most of the export growth from last year.

1Due to the data collection method, the preliminary monthly figures published for ships and oil platforms are often incomplete. In retrospect, therefore, the trade in these goods could in some cases lead to major corrections in the figures. Please see tables 2-4 for the impact these figures have on the external trade.

Higher oil exports

The value of crude oil exports amounted to NOK 27.3 billion in July; a 13.4 per cent increase compared to last year. Both volume and price changes influenced the development. A total of 41.8 million barrels of oil were exported in July, 3.4 million barrels more than July 2012. The price per barrel of crude oil rose by NOK 27 in the same period, ending at NOK 653 per barrel.

Exports of natural gas also decreased somewhat; by 2.1 per cent, to a total of NOK 18.8 billion in July. A total of 8.7 billion standard cubic metres of natural gas were exported in the same month, somewhat less than the year before.

Higher exports of fish and machinery

The total export of mainland goods ended at 29.5 billion in July, an increase of 10.9 per cent compared to July last year.

The export value for the group food and live animals was up 31.5 per cent compared to July 2012. The rise was due to higher salmon prices, which pushed up the value of fish exports considerably, to NOK 4.5 billion.

In the main group machinery and transport equipment the export value was up for general industrial machinery, by 17 per cent, and electrical machinery by 37.2 per cent. Both groups showed an export value of about NOK 1.9 billion last month.

The overall export value for metals showed a smaller change. Compared to July last year the group manufactures of metals was up, while iron and steel as well as non-ferrous metals declined.

Lower imports

Imports in July amounted to NOK 42.1 billion; up NOK 1 billion, or 2.6 per cent, compared to the same period last year. All the most important main groups showed an increase, except crude materials.

Imports of food and live animals ended at NOK 3.0 billion in July, a growth of 19.1 per cent. We are importing more vegetables and fruit in addition to feeding stuff for animals.

The total import value of machinery and transport equipment was NOK 16.0 billion in July, a small increase. The groups machinery for special industries, electrical machinery and road vehicles all increased by NOK 180 to 210 million each. A decline was registered for other transport equipment and telecommunication apparatus.

A considerable fall was registered for metalliferous ores and metal scrap, bringing the total import value for crude materials down to NOK 1.7 billion in July. This was 44 per cent less than July 2012.
