Decline in mainland exports

The value of exported goods amounted to NOK 71.7 billion in July 2012. Imported goods came to NOK 41.4 billion. The total trade surplus ended at NOK 30.3 billion; a decrease of 15.2 per cent compared to July 2011.

The decline in trade surplus was mainly due to a small 0.7 per cent increase in export figures from July 2011 and an increase of 16.6 per cent (NOK 5.9 billion) in imports in the same period. Mainland exports fell by NOK 1.4 billion in July 2012 compared with July 2011. Figures for the period January to July 2012 show an increase in exports of 1.7 per cent as well as an import growth of 9.3 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2011.

Less crude oil, more natural gas

The export value for crude oil amounted to NOK 24.1 billion in July 2012. This is an increase from the previous month, but NOK 4.6 billion less than July 2011. Compared to figures for July 2011, the decline was caused by a fall in the export of crude oil in July 2012 as well as lower oil prices. The exported natural gas values came to NOK 20.2 billion in July 2012; an increase of 47.9 per cent compared to July 2011 when the value of exported natural gas was NOK 13.7 billion.

Considerable decline in mainland exports

Mainland exports in July came to NOK 26.7 billion. This was 4.9 per cent lower than in July 2011, and the lowest value recorded for mainland exports since August 2010. The largest drop was in the group refined petroleum products, which totalled NOK 3.3 billion, compared to NOK 4.4 billion in July 2011. In the commodity group non-ferrous metals, the commodities nickel and aluminium made up the largest share, and gave a total decrease of NOK 753 million. This was a decline from NOK 3.8 billion in July 2011 to NOK 3.1 billion in July 2012 and was due both to lower prices in world markets and a reduction in export volume. A larger decline in July was found in the product group liquefied propane and butane. The value fell from NOK 1.5 billion in July 2011 to NOK 830 million in July this year. However, liquid propane and butane had a value increase of NOK 3.2 billion when comparing the period January to July 2012 with the same period in 2011. In addition, a reduction in exports of electric power contributed to a lower mainland export value compared to figures for July 2011.

In July, export figures rose for the main group machinery and transport equipment compared to figures for July 2011. The largest positive change was for the group construction machinery and equipment, which increased from NOK 382 million in July 2011 to NOK 880 million in July this year. The commodity group scientific and technical instruments and appliances increased by NOK 313 million compared to last year, and totalled NOK 995 million in July 2012.

Import growth

Imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, came to NOK 41.4 billion in July 2012. This was an increase of 16.6 per cent, equivalent to NOK 5.9 billion, compared to the same month in 2011. The largest increase in imports in July 2012 compared to imports in July the year before was for the group ores and metal scrap. In this commodity group, import of nickel ores and concentrates increased by NOK 741 million to NOK 1.4 billion. Refined petroleum products rose by NOK 592 million between the same periods. There were also increased import values for several of the commodity groups under the main group machinery and transport equipment. The largest increase was for passenger cars and station wagons, with an import value of NOK 2.6 billion in July 2012; an increase of NOK 519 million compared to the same month in the previous year. In relative terms, there was a large rise in import value figures for the group construction machinery and equipment. In July 2012, there was a rise in imports under the commodity group telecommunication equipment relating to imports of mobile phones. In July 2012, registered imports of phones came to NOK 667 million. This figure was NOK 246 million higher than in July 2011, and is the highest recorded import value for this product.

The greatest decline in imports was for chemical products in the product groups organic and inorganic chemical products, which in total had a decrease of NOK 426 million in July compared with the same month in 2011.

Changed tables in StatBank 28 June 2012

The tables in StatBank were changed on 28 June. All tables are renumbered - for correspondanse table see the link above. The number of monthly tables has increased from 3 to 9, and the number of yearly tables from 4 to 13. There is now only one quarterly table, since the two mode of transport tables have been aggregated into one table. The increased number of tables in the StatBank implies that there are several new opportunities to find figures at an aggregated level.

All the monthly tables except those for 8-digit commodity numbers have been given a new variable - "So far this year". Additionally, the monthly and yearly tables for the SITC have been expanded with a 3-digit level. The tables showing the main figures have been expanded from monthly figures and will now also include yearly figures and figures by country and trade area. Seasonally-adjusted figures are now in a separate table.

The new tables in StatBank also include figures from other nomenclatures, by groups of end use (BEC) and by industry (CPA). Mainland exports by county of production and trade in ICT goods have also been included, in addition to some special tables for exports of fish, crude oil and natural gas.

Most of the tables have figures from 1988, but some have a shorter time series and some of the main figures have longer series.
