Record high trade surplus

The trade balance in May reached NOK 39.7 billion. The trade surplus for external trade in goods this May is a result of exports and imports, which reached NOK 79.4 and NOK 39.7 billion respectively.

The trade surplus is the highest since January 2006. The value of both imports and exports in May was slightly lower than in April. However, the total resulted in a better trade balance.

In May the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 49.4 billion. Export value of crude oil alone was NOK 35.1 billion, and the value of exports of natural gas came to NOK 12.9 billion. High crude oil prices push income from exports up. The average crude oil price in May increased from NOK 410 per barrel previous year, to NOK 636 May this year.

Machinery and transport equipment contributed to the growth in May and reached NOK 7 billion, up NOK 1.8 billion from May last year. Within this group, general industrial machinery climbed by NOK 1.4 billion ending at NOK 2.7 billion this May.

Imports of goods in May, excluding ships and oil platforms, came to NOK 39.7 billion. Corresponding figures for May last year ended at NOK 39.5 billion.
