Trade surplus remained high in 2006

Exports of goods came to NOK 772.5 billion in 2006, and imports to NOK 404.6 billion. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 367.9 billion, an increase of NOK 58.7 billion compared with 2005.

The preliminary figures, excluding ships and oil platforms, show an increase in imports, exports and trade surplus representing the highest values ever recorded.

In 2006, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates amounted to NOK 471.5 billion, an increase of NOK 64.2 billion compared with 2005. The export value came to NOK 316.5 billion for crude oil, and NOK 139.9 billion for natural gas, an increase of 9.3 and 35.7 per cent respectively. The crude oil price for 2006 averaged NOK 419 per barrel, compared with NOK 348 per barrel in 2005.

Seasonally adjusted figures: Increase in imports

Adjusted for seasonality, the export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates, in the fourth quarter 2006, decreased by 6.3 per cent compared with the third quarter 2006. Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas show a growth of 1.8 per cent, while imports excluding ships and oil platforms experienced an increase of 9.5 per cent.

Increase in exports of non-ferrous metals

The total export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas was NOK 301.0 billion in 2006, compared with NOK 252.8 billion in 2005, an increase of NOK 48.2 billion, or 19.1 per cent. This development was mainly due to a substantial increase of the export value of non-ferrous metals of NOK 15.1 billion, or 41 per cent. The export value of refined mineral products and fish increased by NOK 8.6 billion (31.1 per cent) and NOK 3.5 billion (44.6 per cent) respectively.

Increase in imports of machinery and vehicles

In 2006, imports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms amounted to NOK 404.6 billion, compared with NOK 351.0 billion in 2005, an increase of NOK 53.6 billion, or 15.3 per cent. This development was mainly due to an increase of the import value of the main group 'machinery and transport equipment' of NOK 23.9 billion. The export values of road vehicles increased by NOK 4.8 billion, while the commodity groups 'machinery specialized for particular industries' and 'electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances', rose by NOK 4.4 and 3.3 billion respectively.
