High exports of mineral products

Exports of goods came to NOK 64.8 billion in August 2006, and imports to NOK 32.2 billion. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 32.6 billion, an increase of 14.7 per cent compared with August last year.

In August, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates amounted to NOK 38.7 billion, an increase of NOK 2.5 billion compared with August last year. The export value of crude oil came to NOK 26.5 billion, a decrease of 5.6 per cent. The crude oil price averaged NOK 461 per barrel, compared with NOK 413 per barrel in August last year.

Seasonally adjusted figures: Increase in exports and imports

Adjusted for seasonality, the export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates, for the period June to August 2006, increased by 2.2 per cent compared with the March to May 2006 period. Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas, show an increase of 7.5 per cent, while imports excluding ships and oil platforms experienced an increase of 3.2 per cent.

Increase in exports of refined mineral products

The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas was NOK 26.1 billion in August, compared with NOK 20.7 billion in August last year, an increase of 25.6 per cent. This development was mainly due to an increase of the export value of refined mineral products increased by NOK 1.5 billion, or 51.1 per cent.

The export value of non-ferrous metals increased by NOK 1.1 billion, or 37.4 per cent, compared with August 2005, while the export value of liquefied propane and butanes decreased by NOK 147 million, or 10.5 per cent. The export value of fish increased by NOK 472 million, or 23.8 per cent, compared with August last year.

Increase in imports of machinery and vehicles

In August, imports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms amounted to NOK 32.2 billion, compared with NOK 28.6 billion in August 2005, an increase of 12.6 per cent.

This development was mainly due to an increase of the import value of the commodity groups 'telecommunications apparatus and equipment', 'machinery specialized for particular industries' and 'road vehicles' with an increase in the range of NOK 385 to 570 million.
