Increase in External Trade

Exports of goods came to NOK 65.0 billion in May 2006, and imports to NOK 34.4 billion. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 30.6 billion, an increase of 34.2 per cent compared with May last year.

Revised figures

The figures for exports of natural gas for the 1s t quarter of 2006 have been revised due to a substantial increase in prices. See table http://www.ssb.no/muh_en/tab-05-en.html

In May, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates amounted to NOK 41.1 billion, an increase of NOK 8.9 billion compared with May last year. The export value of crude oil came to NOK 26.5 billion, an increase of 13.6 per cent. The crude oil price averaged NOK 430 per barrel, compared with NOK 305 per barrel in May last year.

Seasonally adjusted figures: Increase in exports and imports

Adjusted for seasonality, the export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates, for the period March to May 2006, increased by 0.8 per cent compared with the December 2005 to February 2006 period. Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas show an increase of 2.4 per cent, while imports excluding ships and oil platforms experienced an increase of 3.1 per cent.

Increase in exports of refined mineral products

The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas was NOK 23.9 billion in May, compared with NOK 19.5 billion in May last year, an increase of 22.4 per cent. The export value of refined mineral products increased by NOK 1.2 billion, or 65.5 per cent, while liquefied propane and butanes decreased by NOK 140 million, or 13.1 per cent.

The export value of non-ferrous metals increased by NOK 1.3 billion, or 41.8 per cent, while the export value of iron and steel decreased by NOK 120 million, or 13.0 per cent.

The commodity groups 'general industrial machinery' and 'machinery specialized for particular industries' increased by NOK 440 million and 240 million respectively.

The export value of fish increased by NOK 645 million, or 34.4 per cent.

Increase in imports of machinery and vehicles

In May, imports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms amounted to NOK 34.4 billion, compared with NOK 28.9 billion in May 2005, an increase of 18.9 per cent.

This development was mainly due to an increase of the import value of the commodity groups 'general industrial machinery and equipment', 'road vehicles' and 'machinery specialized for particular industries' with an increase of NOK 470 to 570 million respectively.
