High crude oil prices - high trade surplus

Exports of goods came to NOK 64.7 billion in January 2006, and imports to NOK 29.2 billion. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 35.5 billion, an increase of 51.2 per cent compared to January last year.

In January, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 41.7 billion, an increase of NOK 12 billion compared with January last year. The export value of crude oil came to NOK 30.4 billion, an increase of 46.1 per cent. The crude oil price averaged NOK 421 per barrel, compared with NOK 278 per barrel in January last year.

Seasonally adjusted figures: Increase in exports and imports

Adjusted for seasonality, the export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates for the period November 2005 to January 2006, decreased by 0.5 per cent compared with the previous 3 months period. Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas, show an increase of 1.8 per cent. Imports excluding ships and oil platforms experienced (saw) an increase of 3.5 per cent.

Increase in exports of mineral products, propane, metals and machinery

The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas, was NOK 23 billion in January, an increase of 28 per cent compared with January last year.. The export value of refined mineral products increased by NOK 1.7 billion, or 124 per cent, while liquefied propane and butanes increased by NOK 964 million, or 135 per cent.

The export value of non-ferrous metals increased by NOK 576 million, or 20.4 per cent, while iron and steel decreased by NOK 220 million, or 19 per cent. The commodity groups 'electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances' and 'general industrial machinery' increased by NOK 370 million and 215 million respectively.

The export value of fish increased by NOK 136 million, or 6.1 per cent.

Increase in imports of machinery, iron and steel

In January, imports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms amounted to NOK 29.2 billion, an increase of 20.5 per cent compared with the same month last year.

This development was mainly due to an increase of the import value of general industrial machinery and equipment by NOK 525 million, and the commodity groups electrical machinery, machinery specialized for particular industries, telecommunications appliances and power generating machinery with an increase of NOK 240 to 340 million respectively.
