Traditional exports increased

Exports of traditional goods came to NOK 16.9 billion in January, an increase of 5.2 per cent compared with figures from January 2003. The export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates was 23.3 billion, and imports ended at 21.3 billion. This resulted in a trade surplus of 18.9 billion in January.

In January, the export value of crude oil came to NOK 15.8 billion. This is a decrease of 1.5 billion compared with January 2003. The average price per barrel of crude oil was NOK 215, compared with NOK 219 in January last year. The amount of crude oil exported shows a slight decrease, 73.8 million barrels compared with 79.2 million. The export value of natural gas was NOK 6.8 billion.

Seasonally adjusted figures

Seasonally adjusted figures for exports of crude oil, natural gas and condensates show a decrease of 0.6 per cent compared with the period from August to October 2003. Similar figures for traditional exports and imports show a decrease of 1.3 and 0.3 per cent respectively. Compared with December 2003 traditional exports show an increase of 7.7 per cent.

Increase in exports of fish, chemical products and metals

The export value of traditional goods was NOK 16.9 billion in January. In January last year the export value was 16.1 billion. This is an increase of 5.2 per cent. This development was mainly due to an increase in export value for non-ferrous metals of 510 million, and chemical products and fish of 320 and 290 million respectively. The export value of electric current shows a decrease, 100 million in January this year compared with 260 million in the same period last year.

Decrease in imports of petroleum products and electric current

In January we imported traditional goods for NOK 21.3 billon compared with 21.9 billon in January 2003. This is a decrease of 2.7 per cent. This development was mainly due to a decrease in imports of petroleum products and electric current, 630 million and 500 million respectively. The import value of metalliferous ores shows an increase of 360 million.
