Less surplus than in May last year

Exports in May this year came to NOK 37.6 billion, down 2.5 per cent from last year. Imports amounted to 22.7 billion, up 1.7 per cent. This reduced the surplus by 8.4 per cent, from 16.3 billion in 2002 to 14.9 billion in 2003.

The fall in the export value in May 2003 was mainly due to reductions in the values of crude oil and natural gas by 2.3 and 7.2 per cent, respectively. Exports of traditional goods increased by 0.5 per cent. Looking at the period January-May the surplus, however, increased by 8 per cent from 2002 to 2003. Imports did not change while exports rose by 3.3 per cent. The increase in value was mainly due to an increase in export values of crude oil and natural gas. Exports of traditional commodities fell by 3.8 per cent.

Seasonally adjusted figures

Seasonally adjusted figures for imports show an increase of 0.6 per cent for the last three months compared with the previous three months. Exports decreased by 5.4 per cent. Exports of crude oil and natural gas fell by as much as 9.6 per cent. The export value of traditional goods increased by 2.7 per cent. From April to May the import value rose by 1.5 per cent, while exports fell by 0.6 per cent, and exports of traditional goods by 1.2 per cent.

Trade with the EU, traditional goods

In the period January to May the export value of traditional goods to the European Union fell by NOK 2 billion, 3.6 per cent, compared with the same period last year. Exports to Denmark decreased by 6.8 per cent, France 6.7 per cent, Great Britain 4.3 per cent, and Germany down 4.6 per cent. These countries contributed the most to the decrease. We see, however, a huge increase in export value when it comes to the Netherlands, up 15 per cent, and Spain, up 28.7 per cent. The most important changes for imports were from Denmark, up 10.3 per cent and the Netherlands, down 5.1 per cent.
