Lower revenue from crude oil

Norwegian exports of merchandise came to NOK 38.4 billion in April. NOK 21.5 billion came from crude oil and natural gas, 19.6 per cent less than last year. Imports amounted to NOK 22.5 billion this year, a decline of 7.1 per cent.

The Norwegian surplus for merchandise came to NOK 15.9 billion in April, down 21.6 per cent from last year. The major reason for the decrease was a drop in the contribution from crude oil exports from 19.9 billion in April 2002 to NOK 15.0 billion in April this year. This year less oil was exported and at a lower price: 83 million barrels at NOK 180, down from 90 million barrels at NOK 222 in April last year. The exchange rate of NOK/USD 7.22 in April compared with 8.61 last year, also contributed to the lower price.

Export of crude oil. 2003 and 2002. Barrels per day

External trade excl. ships and oil platforms. January 1998 - April 2003. Seasonally adjusted and trend series. NOK million Seasonally adjusted

Adjusted for seasonality the export value of crude petroleum crude oil, natural gas and condensates increased by 5.4 per cent in the period from February to April when compared with the value for the previous three months, in spite a decline of 8.7 per cent from March to April. Exports of traditional goods increased by 4.8 in value in the period from February to April compared with the period from November to January. Imports increased slightly by 0.9 per cent.

Trade influenced by Easter

Exports of traditional goods came to NOK 16.9 billion in April and imports to 22.5 billion. Compared with the results for April last year, this was a reduction of 4.8 per cent for exports and 7.1 per cent for imports, partly due to the traditionally long Norwegian Easter holiday falling in the middle of April this year.

Delineation

The figures are exclusive of ships and oil platforms, the same as for traditional goods on the import side. For exports, traditional goods are also exclusive of crude oil, natural gas and condensates.
