Imports increased in April

Norway imported commodities for NOK 24.2 billion in April this year, while exports came to NOK 44.3 billion. This brings the trade surplus for April to NOK 20.1 billion.

The 6.7 per cent increase in imports may have to do with the fact that the Easter holidays came in different months the last two years and therefore may have influenced the monthly totals. See http://www.ssb.no/muh/tab-02.html . Total imports in January - April this year came to NOK 90.2 billion, 5 per cent less than the NOK 95.4 billion for the corresponding months in 2001.

The trade surplus for April contributes to a NOK 74.5 billion surplus so far this year. The surplus last year for this period was NOK 84.4 billion.

Oil prices increased in April

The export value of crude oil for April was NOK 19.9 million against NOK 21.2 billion for April 2001. During January - April this year, exported quantities are on average at the same level as they were last year. Oil prices have increased from 171 NOK/barrel in January to 222 NOK /barrel for April 2002. The price in April 2001 was 234 NOK /barrel.

Traditional goods

Exports of traditional goods excluding oil and gas amounted to NOK 17.5 billion for April. Rafined oil products contributed significantly. Power generation machinery and equipment, industrial machinery and other manufactured products increased, and for the period Jauary - April.
