Increased Trade Surplus

Norwegian trade surplus in March came to NOK 22.8 billion, an increase of 5.1 billion compared with March last year. In March this year the export value was NOK 44.0 billion, while we imported goods for 21.1 billion.

The export value in March was NOK 44.0 billion, a decrease of one billion compared with the corresponding month last year. Of this exports of crude oil, natural gas and condensate amounted to NOK 27.7 billion, an increase of 13 per cent. Exports of crude oil in March came to NOK 17.0 billion, whereas exports of natural gas came to 10.5 billion Adjusted for seasonality, the export figures concerning these oil products, show an increase of 21.0 per cent from February to March this year, while the increase was 9.0 per cent from the last quarter 2001 to the first quarter this year.

In the first three months the export value was NOK 120 billions, while the import value was 66 billion. For imports as well asexports the valuewas about 10 per cent less than in the corresponding period last year. Adjusted for seasonality, the import value of traditional goods shows an increas of 3.4 per cent from the last quarter in 2001 to the first quarter this year. Traditional exports decreased by 0.8 per cent in the same period. Regarding figures including the month of March one has to take into account that Easter this year was in March.

Reduced export of metals, fish and paper

The export value of traditional goods was NOK 16.3 billion in March - down 4.3 billion compared with March last year. The export value of metals went down by one third - to NOK 3.0 billion in March this year. The export value of paper amounted to 770 million, a decrease of 330 million. The export value of fish was 2.4 billion, down 650 million compared with March 2001.

Less imports of cars and machinery

Imports of traditional goods came to NOK 21.2 billion, a decrease of 6.1 billion from March last year. The import value of road vehicles was 2.0 billion, one billion less than in March 2001.The number of imported passenger cars was 10 000 compared with 13 700 in March last year. In addition the number of vehicles for transport of goods was almost 50 per cent less, from 3 400 to 1 800.

The total import value for machinery was much less than in March 2001. This is mainly du to less imports of office machines, telecommunications apparatus and electrical machinery. In March last year import of large aircraft amounted to NOK 1.1 billion whereas there was no such imports in March this year.
