Declining export value

In January the export value came to NOK 38.5 billion - 18.9 per cent less than in the corresponding period in 2001. The prices of crude oil, refined oil products and some wood processing products contributed to this. Imports of traditional goods came to 22.2 billion, down 2.1 per cent.

The total export value decreased considerably from January 2001 to January 2002. The value of crude oil amounted to NOK 13.5 billion - down 40 per cent compared with the same period last year. The price per barrel went from NOK 217 to 171, and in the same period exports of crude oil decreased by 21 per cent. On the other hand the quantity as well as the price of natural gas increased.

Less export of traditional goods

Exports of traditional goods were clearly lower this January than in January 2001. The export value amounted to NOK 16.9 billion compared with 19 billion last year, a decline of 11 per cent. Seasonally adjusted figures for exports of traditional goods show no change from December 2001 to January 2002.

The development throughout the last 12 months is to a large degree due to lower prices of certain important export products. The value of wood processing products decreased by more than 28 per cent, and the export value of oil products showed a similar decrease. The decrease for chemical products came to 13 per cent.

Minor changes in imports of traditional goods

The import value of traditional goods came to NOK 22.2 billion in January, a decrease of 2.1 per cent compared with the same period last year. The price of fuel products (refined oil products) declined the most, 16 per cent. The price of machines and means of transport, chemical products and raw material all showed a decline above six per cent.

The development of imports showed a falling tendency throughout the second half of 2001, influenced by the international markets for metals, wood processing products and petroleum products. Continued low international prices of these products may indicate that the import volume has not changed that much from December to January.

Seasonally adjusted figures for import value show a positive development from December last year to January this year. A comparison between the three-month period, November 2001 - January 2002 and the previous three-month period shows that the import value has declined slightly.
