Balance in settlement flows

In the third quarter of 2009 the outgoing settlements from Norwegian banks ended at almost NOK 348 billion. The total value of incoming settlements for the same period was slightly more than NOK 348 billion.

The total value of both incoming and outgoing settlements between Norway and abroad increased in the third quarter of 2009 compared with the second quarter. The outgoing settlements ended at almost NOK 348 billion; an increase of 16 per cent from the second quarter. The incoming settlements increased by 4 per cent from the second quarter of 2009, ending at somewhat more than NOK 348 billion in the third quarter.

The increase in transactions both to and from North and Central America was the main reason for the rising settlement flows. The incoming settlements from this area expanded by almost NOK 26 billion, or 66 per cent, compared with the second quarter. From North and Central America the outgoing settlements showed a growth of almost NOK 32 billion. This is a 133 per cent growth in value.

Continued growth in the mining and quarrying industry

In the third quarter, as for the second quarter, there was an increase in settlements to and from the mining and quarrying industry compared with previous quarters. The incoming settlements for this industry increased by almost 27 per cent, or close to NOK 21 billion from the second to the third quarter. With regard to outgoing settlements, there was an increase of 122 per cent, or somewhat more than NOK 32 billion.

The transfer of settlements between the manufacturing industry in Norway and abroad showed a decrease for incoming settlements, while the outgoing settlements increased compared with the second quarter of 2009. The incoming settlements fell by 5 per cent or slightly more than NOK 6 billion. The total value of these settlements was almost NOK 119 billion. This total for the manufacturing industry is the lowest registered so far for these statistics. The outgoing settlements for the manufacturing industry totalled slightly more than NOK 112 billion in the third quarter. Compared with the second quarter this year, this is an increase of almost NOK 4 billion, or 3 per cent.

Incoming settlement marginally higher value than outgoing

In the third quarter of 2009, the incoming settlements were only marginally higher than the outgoing. The differences were greater in the first two quarters this year when comparing incoming and outgoing settlements.

The majority of settlements in the Register of Cross Border Transactions and Currency Exchange are transferred via commercial banks. The use abroad of credit cards issued in Norway and the use in Norway of credit cards issued abroad are also registered. Unless otherwise stated, the statistics only cover payments via commercial banks.

The statistics show the extent of cross border payments between individuals or enterprises in Norway and foreign individuals or enterprises. Financial enterprises are not included in the statistics. More details about delimitation and important terms are available in About the statistics .
