Little change in student numbers

Preliminary figures indicate 211 190 students were registered at Norwegian universities and college universities on 1 October 2005.

Statistics Norway is publishing preliminary student figures for 2005 earlier than previous years. The figures are therefore not directly comparable, but there appears to be little change to the 209 900 students in 2004. The university colleges previously named Stavanger University College and Agricultural University of Norway have now obtained university status. The University of Stavanger and Norwegian University of Science and Technology had 7 595 and 2 782 students respectively in autumn 2005.

Female students outnumbered the males, accounting for 60 per cent of all tertiary students in Norway. 55.7 per cent of students at universities and specialised university institutions were female, while college universities consisted of 62.9 per cent female students.

Almost half of all students in 2005 were between 19 and 24 years of age. Female students were older than male students on average, with 35 per cent of females being 30 years and over, compared with 28 per cent of male students. Only 19 per cent of female students were 25 to 29 years old, compared with 23 per cent of male students.
