209 900 students

A total of 209 900 students were registered at Norwegian universities and colleges by 1 October 2004. The number of students in colleges amounted to 129 400, a slight decrease from 2003. The universities reported a slight increase to 80 400 students.

County of residence

In order to observe what parts of the country students come from, we have examined their county of residence at age 16. We found that many students lived in Akershus and Hordaland when they were 16 years old. Also Rogaland, Oslo and Møre og Romsdal were represented with a large numbers of students. Only small groups of students were residents in Finnmark, Sogn og Fjordane, Nord Trøndelag Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder at age 16.

The proportion of women in tertiary education has been stable at 60 per cent recent years. The female proportion, however, varies with county of residence at age 16. Among students who were residents of the two northern counties, Troms and Finnmark, we find the largest proportions of female students - 63 and 64 per cent respectively. Lowest female representation was registered among students from Oslo, Akershus, Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder, where the percentages were between 57 and 58.

One of three students 30 years old or more

Of all students, 45 per cent were in the age group 19-24 years old. 22 per cent was between 25 and 29, and 33 per cent was 30 years old ore more.

Half of the students in universities were 19-24 years old, and 23 per cent was 30 years ore more. Among college students, the proportion of 19- 24 year-olds was 43 per cent. 39 per cent was 30 years old or more.
